Mrs. Daisie V. White

Mrs. Daisie V. White departed this life on Wednesday, February 3, 2010, at the home.  She was born November 18, 1926, in Pace, Mississippi to the union of Roosevelt Mitchell and Bertha Mitchell.

She received her education in the Bolivar County School District in Grapeland, MS.  She confessed Christ at an early age at the Strangers Rest Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Ivory James.

On September 2, 1945, Daisie V. Mitchell married the love of her life, the late Frank White, Sr.  Two boys and four girls were born to this blessed union.  The Whites moved from Mississippi to Kansas City, MO in 1956.

Mrs. White was a devoted mother, grandmother and was affectionately known as “Dai”, “Miss. Daisie” and “Mommie Doo”.  She was a warm and friendly person who loved and supported her family throughout her lifetime.  Mrs. White was employed by Mendel’s Garment Factory and Hal Hardin Apparel until her retirement in November 1991.

Daisie united with the Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. A. B. Simmons and continued her fellowship under the leadership of Rev. Hubert C. Eason and Rev. John M. Miles.  She was an active member of the Daughters Auxiliary, Sunday Church School, Guiding Star Circle of the WMU the culinary committee and the Sanctuary Choir.  One of her most loved songs was “Does Jesus Care.”  During her husband’s illness, she was unable to fellowship but remained firm in her commitment to God and supported her church with monthly financial contributions until her passing.

Daisie was the eldest of eight children.  She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Frank White Sr.; two sisters, Odessa Stevenson and Louella Bradley; four brothers, James Mitchell, Otis Mitchell, Odell Mitchell and Sylvester Mitchell and one grandson, Steven Frank White.

She leaves to cherish her memory: two sons, Vernon White of the home, Frank White Jr. (Teresa) of Lee’s Summit, MO; four daughters, Mona Frances Young, Joyce Marie White of Kansas City, MO, Dianne White of Grenada, MS and Erna Faye Boggess (Ronald) of Kansas City, KS; one sister, Mrs. Modine Kinney of Metcalfe, MS; four sisters-in-law, Mrs. Elizabeth Johnson of Shaw, MS, Verla Mitchell McDade of Oklahoma, Paula Mitchell of Kansas City, MO and Billette Mitchell of Sheridan, AR; 25 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren and a host of special nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.  Special friends include, Michael Young Sr., Melissa Vaughn, Linda Scroggins, Lillie Turner and many others.

Services for Mrs. White will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 13, 2010, at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor John M. Miles officiating.  Burial in Forest Hill Cemetery.  Friends may call from 9:00 A.M. until service time Saturday at the church.

Mrs. Evelyn N. Taylor

Evelyn Nesbit Gaderson was born July 29, 1924, in Kansas City, Kansas to the union of Richard Gaderson and Ethel McCoy Gaderson.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Taylor, a daughter, Joan Payne, son-in-law, Charles Payne, both parents, and her brother, Richard Gaderson Jr.

Evelyn lived in the Kansas City area most of her life.  She attended Sumner High School and cosmetology school in Kansas City, Kansas.  Evelyn worked as a hair dresser for several years before becoming a Federal employee.  She worked as a claims authorizer for Social Security and retired in 1983, after 25 years of civil service.

She accepted Christ and joined Palestine Missionary Baptist Church of Jesus Christ where she was an active member and enjoyed attending Adult Sunday School.  She moved to Orlando, Florida with her youngest daughter in 2005.

On June 11, 1960, Evelyn was united in marriage to her soulmate, Richard Taylor Jr. (deceased, November 2001). To this union was born one son, Richard Taylor, Jr.  Prior to this union Evelyn had three children from a previous marriage, Joan Ledbetter Payne (deceased June 2001), Alfred Crumpton Jr. and Elsie Parks Robinson.  She was a devoted wife and loving mother. 

Evelyn N. Taylor departed this life on Wednesday, February 3, 2010, in Orlando, Florida.

She leaves to cherish her memory: two sons, Alfred Crumpton Jr. and Richard Taylor Jr.; one daughter, Elsie Parks Robinson (Josie Lee); sister, Joanne Gaderson; sister-in-law, Lillian Ealine Gilbert; seven grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

Services for Mrs. Taylor were held 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, February 10, 2010, at Palestine Missionary Baptist Church of Jesus Christ with Pastor Leonard P. Butler, Jr. officiating.  Burial in Forest Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Doris M. Patterson
Sunrise: March 17, 1936                           Sunset:  February 6, 2010

Doris Marie McCoy-Patterson was born, March 17, 1936, in Little Rock, Arkansas to Minnie Gray and Glen Pulliam.  She moved to Kansas City, Missouri at the age of nine and was raised by Ethel (Kelly) and Seneca Bonds.  Doris attended catholic school in her early years and graduated from R.T. Coles High School with a major in mathematics.  Both parents, brother, Tyree Kelly, sister, Berdina Grayer Hammons, and son John McCoy preceded her in death. 

Doris became a licensed beautician and owned her own beauty shop. Doris was a faithful member of New Hebron Missionary Baptist Church and held positions of President of the Usher Board, Choir Member, Sunday School Teacher and Financial Secretary for 25 years.  She was a very strong willed person with high integrity and great aspirations.  Her personality was admired by many people. Her unconditional love for the Lord helped bring lost souls to Christ. Because of the love she shared, she expressed the utmost hospitality by providing excellent cooking, feeding, and housed many homeless families and friends.

Doris married Murry McCoy Jr. and begat eight children.  In 1994, she was united in marriage to James D. Patterson who also preceded her in death. 

She leaves to reflect her life: Victor McCoy, Michael McCoy, Bobbie McCoy, Sheree’ McCoy Wright (Eddie),  Patricia McCoy, Maria McCoy Leathers (Rickey), Eric McCoy (Katrina); god daughter, Vivian Goodwin;  eighteen grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.

Services for Mrs. Patterson will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday (today) February 12, 2010, at New Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church Rev. James Howard Sr., Pastor  with Rev. Larry Busey, Pastor  New Hebron Missionary Baptist Church officiating.  Burial in Leavenworth National Cemetery.  Friends may call from 9:00 A.M. until service time Friday at the church.

Mr. Thomas J. Hughes, Jr.
"Gabby"

Thomas J. Hughes, Jr. quietly slipped away from us Monday, February 8, 2010 at Timberlake Care Center in Kansas City, Missouri.  He was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on November 12, 1930, to Thomas J. Hughes, Sr. and Marian R. Hughes, both deceased.  Also preceding him in death were three brothers, Arthur, Roy and Curtis Hughes, one sister, Nadine Hughes Hudson, and wife Lillian Hughes.

Thomas graduated from R. T. Coles High School in Kansas City, Missouri.  He was a member of the Starlight Baptist Church and lived in the Kansas City area most of his life.

Thomas served in the United States Army from 1951 through 1953, where he received an Honorable Discharge.  He retired from the United States Post Office with 30 years of service as a mail handler, where he was well liked by all.  Prior to working at the Post Office he worked for the City of Kansas City, MO.

He was a member of the M. W. Prince Hall Grand Lodge, F & A.M. of Kansas (Prudence Lodge #6) Kansas City, Kansas and was awarded a Gold Card for 50 years of continuous service.

Thomas found calm serenity with laughter and joy with his significant other, family and friends.

Thomas cannot be summarized in a paragraph.  He was a man of honor, integrity, honesty, compassion, humor and love.

Thomas leaves to mourn his passing: a devoted significant other, JoAnn Ross of Kansas City, MO.; a sister Brenda Robinson of Grandview, MO; sister-in-law, Dorothy Hughes of Kansas City, MO and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mr. Hearthy E. Mathis, Jr.
Sunrise: September 28, 1954                           Sunset:  February 21, 2010

Hearthy E. Mathis was born on September 28, 1954 in Kansas City, Kansas, to the union of Hearthy Elijah Mathis, Sr. and Annie L. Friday-Mathis.  He was the first born of five children.  He was preceded in death by a son, Hearthy Elijah Mercer Mathis III, his father, Hearthy Elijah Mathis, Sr., father and mother-in-law, Calvin and Delores Mercer.

He attended Central High School and graduated in 1972.  Upon graduation, he served in the U.S. Army from August 1972 to July 1974, stationed in Germany.  He went on to get an associate degree in Electronics.  He worked for the family business off and on for several years and for Curtis Mathis TV. He was known as the “TV Doctor”.  He retired from the U.S. Postal Service.

He loved playing with his grandchildren on the computer and listening to gospel music.  If you ever met Hearthy, you would have known that he knew no strangers.

He leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Tina Mercer Mathis; two sons, Ryshod (Wyvette) Mercer and Barron Shelton Mathis; daughters, Rochelle (Howard) Gray and DeAnn (Jamie) Jack; his mother, Annie L. Mathis; brothers, Booker Larry Mathis and Darrell (Letura) Mathis; sister. Carolyn (Larry) Mathis-Snead and LaWanda (Deacon Marvin) Mathis-Sinville; Eleven grandchildren, Tianjelque, Teriana, Ryhem, Sa’armaneke, Armani, Ryshod Jr., Ja’mya, Ta’niya, Jamea, Makiya, Teiara; four sisters-in-law,  and four brothers-in-law; a special cousin-brother, Michael Rose; a special brother-n-law, Gray Mercer who was just like a brother; a special best friend, James Martin, and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Services for Mr. Mathis will be held 11:00 A.M.  Friday (today), February 26, 2010, at E. S. Eley & Sons Funeral Chapel North with Minister Marqus Rose of Second Missionary Baptist Church officiating.  Burial in Missouri State Veterans Cemetery Higginsville, Missouri.  Friends may call from 9:00 A.M. until service time Friday at the chapel.
