Mr. Frankie Harper, Sr.
Sunrise: April 2, 1923                                 Sunset:  December 7, 2011

Frankie Harper, Sr. was born April 2, 1923, in Gould, Arkansas to Alberta Henderson-Clark and Oscar Harper. He had three sisters, Erma (Roosevelt Davis), Lucy (Rev. Lucille Fuller) and Latonia Clark (Henry "Buster" James) as well as two brothers, Oscar and Joseph all of whom preceded him in death. Frankie was accustomed to hard work. He learned that well, living with his by then single mother. He took great care of his mother and was always near and dear to his siblings. He loved them dearly and missed them tremendously.

Our father told us as a young man he worked in the fields farming and chopping cotton. He hunted small game, pheasant, rabbit, squirrel and later deer to help provide food for his mother and siblings. He said the first time, his mother gave him a rifle and two bullets, told him to bring back dinner, and don't come home without it. He saw a rabbit, shot and missed. Down to one bullet he panicked. He knew his mother meant what she said. Afraid he'd miss and waste his last bullet; he took an old box, got a stick, propped it up, then took part of his lunch and placed it beneath. He tied a string to the stick, held onto one end, then hid and waited. As expected a rabbit came to inspect the food, he pulled the string, and down came the box. He took a large rock and hit it on the head. He returned to his mother, with dinner and one bullet to spare. He said she was so proud of him. She took him up and down the road and showed everyone the rabbit and the bullet. That story (true or embellished) pretty much summed up who he was to us; just as stern, hard-working, enterprising, bodacious, an outdoorsman, loved attention, and love to be praised.

He moved to Kansas City and married Chloe Scott, a union that lasted thirty-two years and produced six children; four boys, Frank Junior (deceased), Johnny, Terry, Joseph and Robert Lee; two girls, Gwendolyn (deceased) and Debra Lynn. Frankie worked a variety of jobs and with wife, Chloe, owned several rental properties. For many years he worked with his brother-in-laws, "Buster' and Roosevelt part-time at the Go Gas Go Service Station at 28th & Prospect. He worked at the Orchid Room for many years and upon it's closing, at the Solar Lounge at 27th & Indiana. Together, owner, Sonny Rollins, Rudy Johnson and Charles Harrelson called themselves the "Four Musketeers." All preceded him in death.

As an employee of Swift's Meat Packing Processing Plant for 43 years, he worked in the slaughter house, as a boner, and later a cook. He received many bonuses and accolades for being the fastest and highest producer in his department. He was a very vocal Union Steward at Swift's and fought hard for his constituents. Upon his retirement, he worked part time for True Value Hardware stores.

Frankie accepted Christ in the 70's and began to turn his life around. He joined Palestine Missionary Baptist Church of Jesus Christ and became active in the Brotherhood, Male Chorus, Senior Choir, Trustee Department and Singles Sunday School Class. He regularly attended prayer meeting and was an enthusiastic supporter of Palestine's Camp and annual holiday basket giving drives. He loved his church and attended faithfully until his health began to fail.

Frankie departed this life early Wednesday, December 7, 2011, at home. He leaves his children: a sons-in-law, John (Debra), granddaughters, Theresa (Frank Jr.), Minister Karon Harper and April (Debra), Avia (Robert), Brandi (Johnny) and Onita and Freddie Johnson (Frank); great-grandchildren; Ryan, Tiffani and Zyah; four great-great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law, Lorraine Ellis, Myrtle Bailey, Pat McGlothen and Shirley Johnson; brother-in-law, Millard McGlothen Sr. and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Services for Mr. Harper were held Thursday, December 15, 2011, at Palestine Missionary Baptist Church of Jesus Christ with Pastor Leonard P. Butler, Jr. officiating. Burial in Forest Hill Cemetery.
