Mrs. Jannie B. Smith

On September 1, 2011, at 6:45 P.M., Jannie Burton Smith closed her eyes and left all of her worldly cares and labors behind. In response to the awaited call from her Heavenly Father, she moved to her glorious eternal home. She passed away quietly at her home, with family at her side.

She was born the 5th of 6 children on June 2, 1927, to Robert and Eugenia Burton, in Augusta, Ga. As a young child she dedicated her life to the service of the Lord, Jesus Christ, and began to serve Him with the gifts and talents He had given her. She loved to sew and cook for family and friends; she also played the piano and had a lovely alto voice.

As a teen, she traveled to the East coast with her older brother, and when they came to Kansas City, she settled here. She became a faithful member of Friendship Baptist Church in 1945. While serving there, she met and married Ernest Woodrow Smith and they entered into Holy Matrimony in 1948, they were married 31 years. Born to their union were 3 sons and 2 daughters. She served her home and church family with love and dedication. At Church she served with the Cheerful Givers, the Deaconess Board, the Hannah Circle, as Sunday School and BYPU Teacher, sang in the Young Adult Choir, The Kansas City Chorale Ensemble and The Adult Choir. She faithfully gave her best, in all that she put her hands to. She worked as a Data Transcriber at TWA for 18 years, after which time she retired.

She was preceded in death by daughter, Erisvell, her father and mother, her three brothers: Robert Burton Jr, Jessie Burton (Marie) and William Burton, as well as her older sister, Lona Marie Jackson.

Upon departure to her Eternal Home, she leaves to embrace her memory with love and appreciation, her Sister-in-Law, Marie Burton (Robert) of Detroit, Mi., her sons Glenn E. Smith (Pat) of Denver, Colo., Reginald Smith (Karen) of Lee’s Summit, Mo., Rayfield K. Smith and her daughter, Ernesta J. McNeal both of the home. She also leaves 6 Grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and very dear friends.

Services for Mrs. Smith will be held 11:00 A.M. Friday (Today), September 9, 2011, at Friendship Baptist Church with Rev. James E. Terrance, Jr., Pastor officiating. Burial in Forest Hills Cemetery. Friends may call from 10:00 A.M. until service time Friday at the church

"Angie Bee"

Angelia "Angie Bee" Simonton was born February 18, 1979. She was brought into this world by her parents, Faye Simonton and Timothy Smith of Kansas City, Missouri. She also had a stepfather, Charles Lee of Phoenix, Arizona. She was preceded in death by a sister, Chonta Simonton, a son, Tyree Harris and a host of family and friends.

"Angie Bee" had a wonderful childhood. She attended Metro Tech High School of Kansas City, Missouri and worked at White Oaks Nursing Home for five years and Creative World for one year. "Angie" accomplishments included getting her CMT, CNA and CDL all in the medical field.

"Angie" inspired all who came in contact with her. She was faithful to her church, Victory Outreach Ministry for over a decade. She was a lead teacher in the children's Ministry, the Women's Ministry and she had started what many called The Powerful Prayer Moment with the women in her family.

Angelia "Angie Bee" Simonton passed away on Saturday, September 3, 2011, at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri.

She leaves to cherish her memory: her mother, Faye Simonton ; father, Timothy Smith both of Kansas City, Missouri; stepfather, Charles (Raynet) Lee of Phoenix, Arizona; two sisters, Araina Simonton of Kansas City and Beverly Simonton of Phoenix, Arizona; three children, Terre Harris, Tariah Harris and Taryn Harris; a nephew, Travis Cook all of Kansas City, Missouri; two nieces, Angel Simonton and April Lee of Phoenix, Arizona; grandmother, Norma Brown of Independence, Missouri and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Services for Ms. Simonton will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, September 10, 2011, at Victory Outreach Ministries with Pastor Dan Tynch officiating. Burial in Brooking Cemetery. Friends may call from 9:00 A.M. until service time Saturday at the church.

                                                                                   Mr. Walter J. Gibbs

In 1946, Juanita Caroldine White and Knoules Gibbs were joined in holy matrimony. Four years later they were blessed with a son, Walter Gibbs born September 3, 1950, in Kansas City, Kansas. He attended Central High School where he held the state high jump record for over 20 years. He attended college in New Mexico, Missouri. Having an enduring fascination with machines and how things worked Walter returned to Kansas City where he worked many years for Best Tool Company as a machinist.

Walter joined in fellowship with Sunlight Missionary Baptist Church where he remained a member in good standing. Serving on the Deacon Board, Church Pantry Volunteer and Groundskeeper until failing health would no longer allow him to do so.

A family was created in 1976, when Walter was joined in marriage to Debra Haney and her son Billy Ray Haney. To this union, three children were born, Tamara Gibbs, Walter “L.W.” Gibbs Jr., and LaToya Gibbs.

On September 3, 1950, Walter Gibbs was born. On September 3, 2011, God chose to bless him with the greatest birthday gift possible by ending his battle with cancer and receiving him into his Heavenly Kingdom.
Preceding Walter in death were Knolues Gibbs Sr. (Father), Ronald Gibbs (brother), Curtis Gibbs (brother) and Tamara Gibbs (daughter).
As Walter ends his journey here, he will be sorely missed by his children; granddaughter, Ray’Von Haney; his mother, Juanita Stafford; brother, Fred Gibbs (Jeannine); sister, Vernice Wesley; nieces, Kim Jones (Eric), Kietra Rouser (Kendall) and Leigh Gibbs; nephews, Frederick Michael Gibbs (Tamekia), Knolues Tyler Gibbs, Ijris Graves (Mika) and Glenn Graves, aunt, Marie Galloway, and a host of cousins, extended family, church family and friends.

Services for Mr. Gibbs will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, September 10, 2011, at Sunlight Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Julius Rambo, Pastor officiating. Friends may call from 10:00 A.M. until service time Saturday at the church.

Mr. Marlawn J. Chaney

Marlawn Jearell Chaney, 23, was the first born son to Myra Chaney and Marlawn Toliver on March 16, 1988, in Kansas City, Missouri. He was preceded by his great-grandmother, Treopia Hardin Cuffee "Mother dear", grandfather, Bruce Charles and his cousin, Taurean Stephens "Festus".

"Jearell as he was known by his family had an outgoing, hyper-friendly personality. He loved and enjoyed life in his own way and was afraid of absolutely nothing. Marlawn made an ultimate decision and rededicated his life to Christ on Sunday, September 4, 2011.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his mother, Myra Chaney (Walter Garner); father, Marlawn Toliver; three sisters, Vonnesha Chaney, C'auncia Paige and LaJoy Watts; five brothers, Prentise Sydnor Jr. Jeremy Law, Dominique Toliver, Javion Toliver and Dearies Toliver; maternal grandparents, Shirl Fuller (grandmother), grandfather, Jerry Cuffee; maternal great-grandmother, Nellie J. Roberts; paternal grandmother, Doris Toliver; one niece, JaOnni Dorch; three nephews, Le'Taveion East, Jamaaj Dorch and Prentise Sydnor III; aunts, Lashwanda Chaney, Keyada Chaney, Andrea Paige and Jamie Toliver; uncles, Joey Frazier and Joe Fuller; one great-aunt, Vonda Chaney Logan and one who he called a brother from another mother, Jamaal Dorch along with a host of cousins, relatives and friends.

                                                                                   Mr. Wendall Lewis

Wendell Lewis, was born March 25, 1955, to the union of James W. Lewis Sr. and Clara D. Lewis in Kansas City, Missouri. He was the oldest four siblings. He was preceded in death by both parents, grandparents and sister, Karen Y. Lewis.

At an early age Wendell baptized and accepted Christ at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. J. E. Lloyd.

Wendell received his education from the Kansas City, MO School District. After graduating from high school he was employed at Tension Envelope for 15 years where he also played on the company soft ball team. He worked for the Kansas City School District for 5 years and retired from Hallmark after 12 years. Wendell enjoyed fishing, hunting, sports and being with his family.

On July 28, 1984, Wendell married Edwina Love L. Jones whom he dearly loved. To this union there were four children.

Wendell departed this life on Wednesday, September 7, 2011, in Kansas City, MO.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his beloved wife, Edwina L. Lewis; two sons, Anthony (Jackie) Jones of Grandview, MO and Jaamal (Taneisha) Jones-Lewis of Kansas City, MO; two daughters, Aminah (Gragory) Moore, of Grand Prairie, Texas and Daneisha (Darnell) Lewis; mother-in-law, Sylvia "Grandmuddy" Jones; one brother, James W. Lewis Jr.; one sister, Brenda K. Strozier, two brothers-in-law, Ah'Lee E. Robinson, Edward L. Jones Jr.; six sisters-in-law, Bertha Hooten, Lucreisa (Aaron) Shivers all of Kansas City, MO; Elaine (Hindu) Bynum Raleigh of NC, Elmada (Graylin) Canady, of Hattieville, AR, Denise (Rick) Essex of Merriam, KS, Rosalind (Gaylord) Mustin of Liberty, MO; fifteen and a half grandchildren; three aunts, Shirley Gines of Denver, CO, Helen Davis, Linda Winn both of Kansas City, MO; special friends, Brandley Pervey, Allen (Greek) Smith, Raymond Madge, Sam Jordan, Verlyn Brown and a host of relatives and friends.

Earsline was born on August 7, 1928, in Little Rock, Arkansas to Judge and Bessie Gilmore. She was one of 9 children; her husband, parents and all of her siblings preceded her in death.Earsline married Ernest Banks and they had 8 children. She worked in housekeeping at Baptist Memorial Hospital for 15 years. She was a loving and giving person and was famous for sending boxes to the poor and sending boxes full of clothes, jewelry and goodies to her family, and friends. She loved her family and loved the Lord. She will be greatly missed.
